Ric Sumner, Head of Marketing, reflects on one year at Ortho Consulting Group

Ric Sumner joined Ortho Consulting Group (OCG) as Head of Marketing in April 2021, bringing more than ten years of experience managing creative content teams. 

We caught up with him to learn more about his role, favourite projects and ambitions for 2022.

How do you reflect on the last 12 months at OCG?

Like many people during the pandemic, I was working from home, which gave me the opportunity to reflect on my career and what I wanted to achieve. 

Taking on a new challenge in a completely different industry felt like a leap I needed to make, and I couldn’t be happier with how it has worked out.

I get to work with a hugely talented team within a business whose values and positive culture match my own, and it has been extremely rewarding.

I’ve also had the chance to bring many of the best creatives I have worked with over the past decade with me, whether that’s in web or graphic design, videography or photography, and their work continues to inspire me.

What has surprised you the most in your time here?

With a background in activating corporate social responsibility (CRS) campaigns for a huge range of organisations, I’ve been very lucky to meet some incredible people transforming their local communities. 

In this role, I didn’t expect to get the chance to meet and interview so many innovators and entrepreneurs developing products that will shape the future of healthcare and patient outcomes. It’s been a privilege to gain that insight through those one-on-one conversations.

As someone who has spent the last few years in a management role I’ve also surprisingly enjoying throwing myself back into content creation and utilising tools like Visme, which allows you to create high quality and engaging visual content quickly and efficiently and which didn’t exist the last time I was producing regular content.

It’s been a great and timely refresher as we start to onboard new creators who will take on those responsibilities.

Finally, I’ve attended many congresses, conferences, launches and exhibitions as part of the event media team before but not as a client and it’s been a pleasant change to take ownership of our event marketing strategy. We’re experimenting all the time, and I hope people will see the fruits of that labour soon.

What are your ambitions for the rest of 2022 and beyond?

I’m passionate about improving the customer journey from initial awareness through to conversion, and how the marketing team can better support the business. 

We’ve made real progress in this area, and I expect this to continue in the months to come. I’ve especially enjoyed working with the marketing automation team at Force24 and how they have helped us supercharge ROI, and I’m excited to see some of the projects we are currently working on being unveiled.
